Omega-3s and brain health

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients, meaning our bodies cannot produce them. Therefore we need to obtain them from our diet. There are three main omega-3 fatty acids:

Natural sources rich in DHA and EPA are mainly oily fish and algal oil. Flaxseed, chia seeds, and walnuts are examples of natural sources rich in ALA.

Evidence suggests omega-3 fatty acids may play crucial roles in cardiovascular health, inflammation, and even brain health.

While extensive research has been performed on the impact of DHA and EPA on brain health, little is known about ALA and brain health. A clinical study from early 2023 delved into this (link to the study).

In a 12-week study, scientists gave healthy older adults either an ALA supplement (flaxseed oil) or a placebo. Scientists then assessed brain functions like attention, memory, and reasoning before and after the study.

โ€ข Those on the ALA supplement displayed improved verbal fluency – the ability to generate words swiftly. This skill is crucial for effective communication and overall cognitive health.
โ€ข ALA did not seem to influence other brain functions in this study.

While the findings are promising, these are based on a single study in one population and a specific age range (older adults). Therefore it has its limitations. More research is needed to explore the broader impact of ALA and its potential benefits for different groups.
